Ok, maybe there is one rule: that you love your dessert and it reflects your couple personality.
It used to be that the standard and traditional dessert at a wedding was the classic tiered cake. That is still the overwhelmingly popular choice, but you do have other options.
People love the ever-popular dessert table, but why is it so appealing? Because of the variety, options, colors, heights and levels–all of these things add visual interest and anticipation. When you have a nice full dessert table it feels decadent and special. When the guests see that table loaded with treats, their interest is piqued!
Whether you want your table to look like a sweets shop straight out of Willy Wonka, or if you’re looking for something more elevated and sophisticated, a dessert table can underline the end of the evening in a sweetly memorable way.
Still married to the idea of a classic tired wedding cake? You don’t have to choose! You can have your dessert table and your tiered wedding cake and eat it, too!
The best part is we can help you plan, coordinate, and organize all of it.

Some Dessert Table Ideas
- Dessert Action Stations are fun and interactive. The catering staff can create individual desserts like Bananas Foster and sundaes, allowing guests to customize their toppings. Or filling custom mixes of Swedish candies into wedding-themed bags. Also, DIY stations can be set up for guests to decorate their own cookies or donuts. Even custom color mixes of sprinkles can color coordinate everything!
- A “Sweets Shop” with lollipops, candy bars, and a variety of sweets that make you feel like a kid with take-home paper bags in colors that coordinate.
- A Pittsburgh style cookie table with a variety of cookies piled high, and decorative ones in cello bags for guests to take home. You could include little boxes for guests to fill and save for later.
- A cake pop table in the wedding colors and the couple’s favorite flavors. This is great if you can’t decide what flavor you want the cake to be, because you can have a variety of flavors. Or you can have cake pops in flavors and decorations that echo the wedding cake.
- A pie table, along with a traditional cake, would cover a lot of guest preferences. Also, if you’re in Virginia, a chess pie is the Virginia state pie. You can which is your state pie, or other state desserts, and include them on the table. Or have state pies and desserts that reflect where the couple are from. Or maybe you want to have a relative’s favorite flavors as a nod to them.
- A themed dessert table is always whimsical. A beach theme, or cocktail-flavored treats, old fashioned candy favor bags, or a table filled with confections of different shades of the same color, whatever your favorite color is, or the wedding colors are. These are all ways to make the table exciting.
- Sometimes how the couple met, or their personalities can inform the dessert table just like those things often inform the signature cocktails. (Yes, we will be posting about cocktails and bars soon!)
